I’m not much of a hoodie person … until it comes to dressing my daughter in them! I happen to think that baby/toddler size hoodies are one of the cutest things ever. <3

About The Hudson Hoodie

The Hudson Hoodie from Made for Mermaids is a relaxed fit, knit unisex hoodie that comes in child’s sizes 1/2 to 14. It has some fun, front color blocking that is perfect for playing with fabric combinations and using up scraps of fabric. The crossover hood can be lined or hemmed and the sleeves can be cuffed or hemmed. It also has an optional kangaroo pocket.

My Version of the Hudson Hoodie

I mashed the 1/2 size width with 1 height — tall mama and papa, tall baby girl! The fit is perfect! I used a pretty French Terry from JoAnn’s as well as some Doodles Interlock Knit (also from JoAnn’s}.

Since Doodles doesn’t have the greatest recovery, I used it for the side panels and hood lining. The colors in these two fabrics were a perfect match! I skipped the pocket for this one, but will definitely make more with the pocket!

I chose to topstitch the edge of the hood and the front panels. Since the hood doesn’t get stretched or pulled, and the front panels only have horizontal stretch, I just topstitched using a simple straight stitch on my Singer Featherweight. I’ll take any excuse to use that machine!

If you’ve never tried to photograph a toddler by yourself, in public … I highly recommend it. It’s great exercise. 😀

Oh yeah … and I forgot to put shoes on her! #epicfail #barefootisbetter

Seriously though … it’s the toughest photo session ever because you’re not only trying to get good photos of the toddler, you’re also trying to keep them alive!  I much prefer double teaming a photo session with my Hubby … but schedules just didn’t work this time so I was on my own!

The hoodie is banded at the bottom. With Elsie in cloth diapers and moving around so much, the band kept sliding up! There is a hack from Made for Mermaids to make the Hudson with a hemmed bottom. I’m doing that for my next one!

What do you know? The cloth diaper is the perfect color match to the hoodie!

Conclusion

The Hudson hoodie is a fun sewing project and really straightforward. The instructions are easy to follow. Brittany Reini, the designer for the Hudson Hoodie, was very, very picky about the final fit and I think she did a lovely job. I love that the tutorial includes instructions for blending sizes — the visuals always help.

In addition to the release of the Hudson Hoodie today, Made for Mermaids is also releasing the Men’s Hudson and Women’s Hudson Hoodies. The whole family can match!
